A community is in mourning after a 22-year-old man was shot and killed during a carjacking in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.
Family and friends gathered Saturday to hold a vigil for Darwin Tirado.
The vigil took place on the 700 block of West Waveland Avenue, the same spot where the life-ending violence occurred.
The tragedy began around 3:45 a.m. last Wednesday near the intersection of West Waveland Avenue and North Halsted Street.

Tirado was sitting in a vehicle with a 38-year-old man when two attackers approached them.
Police report that the suspects carjacked the 22-year-old and opened fire.
Tirado was struck by gunfire and later died from his injuries.
The 38-year-old passenger was not physically harmed during the encounter.

The suspects fled the scene in the stolen vehicle, leaving a community in shock.
Tirado was a beloved member of the local culinary scene and worked at restaurants owned by Chef Art Smith.
Chef Smith joined the victim’s family at the vigil to demand justice for the young man.
Tirado’s mother has also worked as a chef with Smith for many years.

Recent History
This fatal shooting marks a disturbing spike in violent carjackings across the North Side.
Lakeview and the surrounding Boystown area have seen an increase in late-night robberies over the past several months.
Earlier this week, the medical examiner identified another man found dead near the same carjacked vehicle on the South Side.
Police are currently investigating if these two deaths are linked to the same group of offenders.
Residents in Lakeview have expressed growing concerns over safety near the busy Halsted Street corridor.
Community leaders are now calling for increased police patrols during the early morning hours.
As of Sunday, Chicago Police have not made any arrests in connection to Tirado’s death.
The investigation into the two suspects remains active.
