CBN Debunks Rumors of ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 Notes, Warns Against Fake News

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed circulating rumors claiming the introduction of ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 naira notes, labeling the information as false and urging the public to rely only on its official channels.

The rebuttal came via a statement posted on X today, addressing speculation that the new denominations would enter circulation starting May 1, 2025.

In its post, the CBN clarified: “This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is http://cbn.gov.ng.”

The statement directly refuted claims that the apex bank was planning to roll out higher naira notes, a rumor that had gained traction across social media and some news outlets in recent days. The alleged timeline of May 1, 2025, for the notes’ debut was also debunked as baseless.

This is not the first time the CBN has had to address false claims about currency changes. Past rumors, including alleged plans for new denominations or coin reintroductions, have been similarly quashed. For now, the highest naira note remains the ₦1,000, introduced in 2005, with no official plans for expansion.
