A vibrant weekend night in the heart of downtown Morris shattered into a scene of terror and heartbreak early Saturday morning.
One man is dead and another remains hospitalized following a targeted shooting outside a popular local establishment.
The incident occurred in the 100 block of West Washington Street, a central hub for the city’s nightlife and social gathering.

Police identified the deceased victim as Julian Rosario, 35, of Channahon.
Rosario was a well-known figure in the local community, described by those who knew him as a dedicated father and a loyal friend.
The Grundy County Coroner, John Callahan, pronounced Rosario dead at the scene shortly after the gunfire ceased.

A second victim, identified by friends and coworkers as “Pauly” Mitchell, was also struck by the gunfire.
Mitchell was reportedly acting as an innocent bystander when the bullets began to fly.
Emergency responders quickly coordinated an airlift to transport Mitchell to Loyola University Medical Center for specialized trauma care.

The Sequence of Events
The violence reportedly began around 1:00 a.m. as the local bars were preparing to close their doors for the night.
Witnesses described a brief verbal altercation that escalated with terrifying speed.
According to statements from those at the scene, the suspect allegedly walked away from the initial dispute.

Rather than leaving the area, the individual reportedly walked half a block to his vehicle to retrieve a firearm.
He then returned to the front of Clayton’s Tap and opened fire, striking Rosario in the back.
Morris Police officers were already in the immediate vicinity and heard the distinct sound of shots being fired.

The rapid response of the Morris Police Department and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office likely prevented further loss of life.
Officers converged on the scene within seconds, finding both victims on the pavement and the suspect still nearby.
Suspect in Custody
Authorities quickly apprehended Marshall Szpara, 22, of Seneca, in connection with the deadly attack.
Szpara was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Grundy County Jail.
He currently faces two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, though these are considered preliminary charges.
The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the evidence to determine if murder charges will be filed.

Investigators spent the early hours of Saturday morning canvassing the area for shell casings and reviewing surveillance footage.
The firearm allegedly used in the crime has been recovered by technicians for forensic testing.
Tributes to Julian Rosario
As news of the homicide spread, social media was flooded with emotional tributes for Julian Rosario.

Friends described him as the “life of the party” who always knew how to make a room laugh.
“He beamed about his kids and was extremely polite and respectful,” one server who met him that night shared.
Family members recalled him as a “real definition of a real father” who worked hard to provide for his loved ones.

“I can’t wrap my head around these events,” one close friend posted. “You were a good dude, always positive and cool as hell.”
The loss has left a massive void in the Channahon and Morris communities, where Rosario was a frequent face.
Recent History
While Morris is often viewed as a safe haven from the violent crime seen in larger metropolitan areas, this shooting has shaken that perception.
Downtown Morris is typically a high-traffic area during weekends, drawing visitors from surrounding towns like Seneca, Channahon, and Joliet.
This incident follows a national trend where minor disputes in nightlife districts are increasingly settled with firearms rather than physical altercations.
Local authorities have noted that while homicide is rare in Morris, the influx of visitors to the “Tap” district requires constant vigilance.
In recent years, the Grundy County area has seen a slight uptick in weapons-related arrests, prompting calls for increased security in late-night zones.
Many residents expressed shock that a 22-year-old would allegedly resort to such extreme violence over a neighborhood dispute.
“What happened to fighting with your fists?” one resident asked. “Instead, a coward decided to grab a gun.”
