Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies saved a woman’s life Friday afternoon after her estranged husband allegedly attempted to murder her in their Beach Park home.

The violent encounter occurred around 2:40 p.m. on January 16, 2026, at a residence located in the 9900 block of West Michigan Boulevard.

Officers arrived on the scene to find the suspect, 47-year-old Michael Coleman of Zion, attempting to flee the property.

While some deputies detained Coleman, others rushed into the home to find a 34-year-old woman unconscious and struggling to breathe.

The deputies immediately initiated life-saving CPR, successfully restoring the victim’s pulse before paramedics arrived.

This incident highlights the volatile nature of domestic disputes and the critical role of rapid police intervention in the Chicago suburbs.

As Lake County faces a rise in reported domestic disturbances, this case serves as a grim reminder of how quickly “conversations” can turn into life-threatening assaults.

Local residents are increasingly concerned about the safety of their neighborhoods as violent crime ripples outward from the city center.

Detailed Incident Report

The emergency call began as a report of a domestic battery in progress involving an estranged husband and the mother of his children.

Upon arrival, deputies intercepted Michael Coleman as he walked away from the West Michigan Boulevard residence.

The situation inside the home was far more dire than the initial dispatch suggested.

A deputy discovered the victim on the floor, exhibiting “agonal breathing,” a sign that her brain was starving for oxygen.

Recognizing the immediate threat to her life, the officers transformed the crime scene into a trauma center.

While one team secured the suspect, another team focused entirely on chest compressions and resuscitation efforts.

These heroic actions maintained blood flow to the victim’s vital organs during those first critical minutes.

Beach Park Fire and Rescue arrived shortly after to transport the woman to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Domestic Violence in the Chicago Suburbs

The Beach Park area and surrounding Lake County communities have seen a fluctuating but persistent rate of domestic-related violence over the last decade.

Strangulation, the method allegedly used by Coleman, is considered by experts to be one of the most significant predictors of future lethality in domestic cases.

Studies often show that a victim who has been strangled once is significantly more likely to become a victim of homicide later.

This specific neighborhood in Beach Park is typically known for its quiet residential atmosphere, making this daylight attack even more shocking to locals.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has ramped up training for deputies to identify the subtle signs of strangulation, which often leaves no external marks but causes internal damage.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg noted that the disciplined response of his staff is a byproduct of rigorous, daily professional training.

State’s Attorney offices across the Chicago area have prioritized domestic battery cases recently to prevent these escalations.

By filing a petition to detain Coleman, prosecutors are signaling a “zero tolerance” approach to repeat domestic offenders in the region.

Community Impact & Safety Tips

The shockwaves of this attempted murder are felt deeply by the neighbors on West Michigan Boulevard and the wider Beach Park community.

Seeing a heavy police presence and a life-saving medical evacuation in broad daylight shatters the perceived safety of suburban life.

Law enforcement officials urge residents to be vigilant and to report any sounds of distress from neighboring homes immediately.

To help protect yourself and your loved ones, consider these three vital safety steps:

Establish a “Safe Word”: Create a code word with friends or family that signals you are in danger and need the police called immediately without alerting an aggressor.

Document and Report: Even minor incidents of battery should be reported to build a legal paper trail that can assist in obtaining Orders of Protection.

Utilize Local Hotlines: Chicago and Lake County offer 24/7 domestic violence resources that provide confidential safety planning and shelter options.

Michael Coleman currently faces one count of Attempt Murder and two counts of Domestic Battery/Strangulation.

He remains in custody pending a detention hearing, while the community prays for the recovery of the victim.
