The first reported shooting of 2026 in Chicago left a man hospitalized after gunfire erupted inside a South Loop apartment early Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. on January 1 in the 800 block of South Michigan Avenue.
According to the Chicago Police, a 37-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.
Emergency responders transported the victim to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is currently listed in fair condition.
Preliminary reports suggest the shooting took place inside a residential unit.
Police have not yet released details regarding a motive or a description of the shooter.
As of Thursday morning, no suspects are in custody.
Detectives from Area Three are leading the investigation into the city’s first act of gun violence this year.
