A chaotic series of collisions in the west suburbs left one man dead and several others, including two police officers, hospitalized on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident began when the driver of a Genesis SUV slammed into a Hillside police squad car near the intersection of Butterfield Road and Laverne Avenue.
While the two officers inside the cruiser sustained injuries, officials confirm they are expected to recover.
According to Hillside police, the driver did not stop after hitting the police vehicle.
The SUV continued down Butterfield Road, crossing multiple lanes of traffic and striking several other cars along the way.
The rampage ended in a Walgreens parking lot, where the SUV struck a male pedestrian who was walking into the store.
Casualties and Investigation
Emergency responders rushed the pedestrian to a nearby hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his name or age.
The driver of the SUV was also hospitalized, along with three or four other motorists whose vehicles were caught in the path of the crash.
Police are still investigating what caused the driver to lose control. No charges have been filed at this time.
