Chicago Police Investigate Death of 10-Year-Old Girl in Bronzeville

As dangerously frigid temperatures gripped Chicago on Saturday night, one local woman took action, personally delivering essential supplies to those struggling to survive the intense cold.

Dominique McKenzie, who has been helping those in need for years, made this weekend’s effort even more critical as the city faces arctic weather conditions.

Supplies Brought Hope

McKenzie and her family drove across the city, directly distributing items like hand warmers, blankets, and gloves to individuals outside. The focus was on helping people through the life-threatening cold.

“There are people who are just, you know, really trying and don’t have the resources that we have,” McKenzie said. “So, it’s important for me to continuously do it.”

McKenzie is the founder of the nonprofit Poor Connections. While the organization primarily mentors young men in Chicago and supports small businesses, the mission of giving back to the community is at its core.

She explained that the loss of her brother last year solidified her belief that helping others was her purpose. “I really wanted to reach back… especially to the men and our youth and give back from a woman’s perspective,” she stated.

Community and Personal Effort

McKenzie gathered donations from local businesses in Oak Forest, but she notes that much of the relief effort came out of her own pocket. This isn’t her first time helping the community during a crisis, and she says it won’t be her last.

“It’s cold. We’re in different times. And so, I’m just doing my part,” McKenzie concluded.

Meanwhile, a warming trend is expected to bring relief next week, with temperatures potentially climbing into the 40s by Wednesday.
