A semi-truck caught fire on Monday afternoon, forcing authorities to close all outbound lanes on I-55 near Chicago’s South Side. The incident happened just before rush hour, causing major traffic delays.
Illinois State Police reported the fire started around 3:10 p.m. on the Stevenson Expressway, just north of Damen Avenue. Video from social media showed the truck’s cab fully in flames, with thick smoke rising into the sky.
Police shut down the lanes for cleanup. By 3:45 p.m., drivers faced delays of up to an hour as traffic backed up. The lanes reopened around 6 p.m.
No one was hurt in the fire, according to police.
