A woman identified as Tamia Townes is dead after a tragic incident at a CTA Brown Line station on the city’s Near North Side Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. at the Sedgwick Brown Line and Purple Line Express station, located in the 1500 block of South Sedgwick Street.
Chicago police confirmed that the victim fell onto the tracks and made contact with the electrified third rail. The woman, whose age was not immediately disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
The cause of the fall remains unclear, and authorities have not provided any immediate details on how or why the woman ended up on the tracks. Area detectives are currently investigating the incident.
The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) frequently issues warnings to riders about the dangers of the third rail, which carries 600 volts of direct current and is the primary power source for the trains.
