The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has fixed a dangerous gaping manhole on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way after its cover was stolen by vandals.
The corporation’s swift response follows a temporary repair on Saturday night and a permanent concrete solution installed on Sunday.
The Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, stated that the widespread theft of manhole covers has reached an “alarming state.”
He called for a collective effort from all Lagosians to combat the vandals, who he referred to as “enemies of safety.”
The General Manager of LSPWC, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, revealed that over 4,000 manhole covers have been vandalized and stolen across the state’s 57 local government areas.
He added that over the past two weeks, the corporation has replaced more than 300 of these covers in areas like Lagos Island, Surulere, and Ikeja, with more slated for replacement soon.
Ajanaku noted that the government has tried using materials with no market value to deter vandals, but the effort has not been successful. He urged residents to join the fight against the vandals to ensure public safety.
