The Nigerian comedy scene has been thrown into unexpected drama as two of its popular figures, Seyi Law and Mr Macaroni, engage in a public war of words on Twitter, each accusing the other of twisting the truth about how their paths first crossed in the entertainment industry.
The drama began when Seyi Law took to Twitter to reflect on his 20-year journey in comedy, seizing the moment to assert that Mr Macaroni once sought his help to boost his comedy career. According to Seyi, it was his cousin, Tolu, who persistently begged him to meet Macaroni, eventually bringing the budding comic to his mother’s birthday in January 2020. Seyi claims he graciously agreed to help, even going as far as writing a skit for Macaroni and starring in it. He shared a video of the skit to back his claims, saying:
“Many may not acknowledge my impact in their lives, but that doesn’t write them off… I wrote this script for him and went ahead to act with him, and like they say, the rest is history.”
But Mr Macaroni didn’t let the claims slide. In a lengthy, strongly worded clapback, he dismissed Seyi Law’s account as “unnecessary lies” and accused the veteran comedian of trying to rewrite history.
“Firstly, I never asked your cousin to reach out to you on my behalf… it was you who reached out to me in December 2019,” Mr Macaroni wrote. He also pointed out that he was already a viral sensation with over 100,000 followers and several collaborations before the skit with Seyi Law.
Macaroni insists that their collaboration was mutual and that Seyi Law benefited from the exposure just as much, especially when he called on Macaroni to help promote his show two months later.
“You making it seem like I was one nuisance that ambushed you at your mother’s birthday party… is far from the truth!”
The spat has since gone viral, dividing fans and sparking heated debates across social media. While some side with Seyi Law, praising him for his role in uplifting rising talents, others rally behind Mr Macaroni, accusing Seyi of trying to steal credit for someone else’s shine.
As both comedians stand their ground, one thing is certain, this feud is far from a laughing matter.
