A 21-year-old woman will remain in jail after officials say she set fire to baby cribs inside a Woodstock Walmart on New Year’s Eve.
Adilyn Monette appeared in court Friday afternoon following the incident at the store on Lake Avenue.
According to the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, Monette entered the store around 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday and headed for the camping aisle.
Surveillance footage captured Monette grabbing a can of camping fuel and placing it in her cart.
Prosecutors say she walked to the baby section, then returned to the camping aisle for a second can of fuel.
She then returned to the infant aisle, poured the fuel over multiple baby cribs, and set them on fire before walking out of the store.
While Monette fled the scene, Woodstock police quickly tracked her down using vehicle registration records.
The store’s sprinkler system successfully extinguished the flames, and no injuries were reported.
However, the building suffered more than $10,000 in damage and remained closed through Friday.
History of Similar Charges
Monette faces a felony charge of aggravated arson.
During the hearing, it was revealed that she has a pending arson charge in Colorado and was out on supervised release for that case at the time of the Walmart fire.
Monette is scheduled to return to court this coming Wednesday.
