Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has waded into the never-ending conversation about who truly reigns supreme in Afrobeats.
In a recent chat with Complex, the Mavin Records star boldly crowned Grammy-winning superstar Wizkid as the undisputed king of the genre.
Her statement comes at a time when fans and critics alike constantly pit Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy collectively known as the “Big 3” against one another in heated debates over who wears the Afrobeats crown.
Ayra Starr, however, made her stance clear, explaining why she chose to feature the Starboy boss on her hit track ‘Gimme Dat.’
“Nobody else could have been right on that song [‘Gimme Dat’] aside from Wizkid. Even just his sonics and the sound, the chorus pattern feels very Wizkid; it feels very like sexy Afrobeats. And everybody knows Wizkid is the king of sexy Afrobeats,” she said.
The fast-rising Afropop queen emphasized that Wizkid’s unique ability to deliver smooth, sultry Afrobeats makes him incomparable.
Ayra Starr’s declaration is already stirring conversations online, with fans of Davido and Burna Boy likely to counter her opinion. Still, it adds more spice to the never-ending “Big 3” debate dominating Afrobeats culture.
