Who is Tope Alabi?

Tope Alabi is a renowned Nigerian gospel singer and actress who has achieved great success with her moving Yoruba worship songs. With her exceptional talent, she has earned the affectionate nickname ‘Ore ti O common’ and ‘Agbo Jesu’.

Born on 27th October 1970 in Lagos State, Tope Alabi is the daughter of Christian parents, Pa Joseph Akinyele Obayomi and Madam Agnes Kehinde Obayomi. She hails from the Imeko/Afon local government area of Ogun state and grew up in Lagos and Ibadan, Oyo state.

As the only daughter among three children, Tope received her secondary education at Oba Akinyele Memorial High School, Bashorun Anlugbua, Ibadan, where she obtained her West Africa School Certificate (WAEC) in 1986. She later went on to study Mass Communication at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where she graduated with a diploma in 1990.

During her secondary school days, Tope became a member of the then “Jesters International” group, which was composed of talented actors such as Jacob, Papilolo, and Aderupoko. She participated in the group’s activities from 1982 to 1984, which provided her with ample training, exposure, and experience in the field of drama. After obtaining her diploma, she briefly worked with NTA Ibadan as a correspondent, where she was under the auspices of Mr. Yanju Adegbite. 

Tope also had the opportunity to work with Centerspread Advertising Limited, which is located in the Ilupeju area of Lagos. Additionally, she worked with Re-Union Nigeria Limited, which is situated in Gbagada, Lagos.

Tope Alabi Career

Tope Alabi is a highly acclaimed gospel singer who has been making waves in the Nigerian music industry for over a decade. Her music is known for its catchy tunes and inspiring lyrics, which have earned her a reputation as one of Nigeria’s gospel music geniuses.

Tope’s journey in the music industry started officially in 1994 when she returned to the Theatre Art profession and joined the prestigious “Alade Aromire Theatre Group.” During this time, she learned everything about drama, and her acting profession grew rapidly, becoming popular in both Ibadan and Lagos.

However, it was her outstanding talent in gospel music that brought her to the limelight. She gained prominence in the contemporary gospel music industry in Nigeria and worked with other popular traveling and stage theatre groups, further cementing her status as a highly respected artist in the industry.

Tope Alabi as a unique talent for blending traditional and modern beats to create multiple melodies that set her apart in the industry. Her singing career has been nothing short of impressive, with several Yoruba songs released in various genres such as Makossa, Salsa, and hip-hop beats. One of her most celebrated albums, “Agbelebu”, was launched in 2012 and still enjoys fantastic airplay to date. In the past decade, she has successfully released eight albums, each showcasing her exceptional musical prowess.

Notably, Tope Alabi has become a household name in the Yoruba movie industry, having been invited by various writers, producers, and directors to write and perform soundtracks for their movies. Her contribution in this regard has been immense, with about 350 Yoruba movie soundtracks to her credit. Her music has not only entertained millions of people but has also helped to enhance the overall quality of Yoruba movies.

Tope Alabi Marriage

Tope Alabi met her husband, Soji Alabi, in 1994 while he was working as a studio engineer. Soji played a pivotal role in Tope’s conversion to Christianity and has since been handling her various soundtracks and albums with great professionalism. Their love story began in 1998, and after two years of courtship, they tied the knot on November 16th, 2000. Their union has been blessed with four healthy and beautiful children.

Together, Tope and Soji Alabi have created a lasting legacy in the music industry and have established Johnpat Studios in Lagos, Nigeria. The studio has become a hub for budding and established artists, providing state-of-the-art equipment and a conducive environment for creativity and inspiration. The couple’s joint efforts have not only elevated their music careers but have also contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Nigerian music industry.
