Controversial Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been advised by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, to avoid unnecessary risks in his activism.
Adeyanju, a prominent human rights lawyer, expressed concern over VDM’s bold approach, stating, “I call VDM every time to be careful and stop taking unnecessary risks, but he doesn’t listen most of the time.”
Adeyanju emphasized the fleeting nature of public attention, warning, “If anything happens to you today, everyone has moved on by tomorrow. We only overrate ourselves; Nigerians don’t rate anybody.”
The lawyer’s remarks come in the wake of VDM’s multiple arrests and legal battles, including a recent detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in May 2025.
VDM, a polarizing figure known for his outspoken critiques of corruption and injustice, has repeatedly faced legal repercussions, including arrests for defamation and impersonation.
Despite these challenges, he continues to command a significant online following, sparking debates about free speech and accountability in Nigeria.
