Controversial Nigerian social media critic, VeryDarkMan, has sparked fresh debate online after calling out music superstars Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid for their extravagant spending on luxury cars, despite the prevailing economic challenges facing many Nigerians.
This latest criticism follows Burna Boy’s recent acquisition of a brand-new McLaren Sienna, reportedly worth a staggering N3.5 billion. With the purchase, Burna Boy becomes the first individual in Africa to own the newly released model; a feat that has grabbed headlines and admiration from fans and automobile enthusiasts alike.
However, the celebration was short-lived as VeryDarkMan took to his Instagram page to question the trio’s sense of social responsibility. He referenced the timing of the purchase, especially considering that just hours later, Davido also reportedly added a 2026 Mercedes Maybach SL 680 to his collection, another luxury ride said to cost around N1.2 billion.
Adding fuel to the fire, Wizkid was not left out. The critic also pointed to reports from a few months back indicating that the Starboy boss acquired a vehicle worth N1.7 billion.
Reacting to the news in a now-viral video, VeryDarkMan expressed deep disappointment in the artists’ display of wealth, urging them to reflect on the struggles of their fans and the country at large.
“Yesterday I saw the news that Burna Boy bought a N3.5 billionaire car. The same yesterday Davido bought a car of over 1billion Naira. They have been doing these,” he said.
“The question I have for Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido, don’t you people read the room? Una no really dey see country wey una come from? You guys are not the government but I just need to say this.”
Directing a personal message to Davido, with whom he claims to share a relationship, VeryDarkMan questioned the singer’s contributions to his home state.
“Let me start with Davido because na you I know very well, na you be my guy. What can you beat your chest to say you have done for the people of Osun State that you come from.
“What is your contribution to the growth of Nigeria? Because you have benefited from Nigeria and you have benefited from your fans. What can your fans say they have benefited from you? The last time I saw your video from Osun was when your uncle was contesting for governor and you needed to help him secure votes. But after then what have you built that benefited the youths?”
The video has since triggered a flurry of mixed reactions across social media, with some users supporting VeryDarkMan’s views on social responsibility, while others defended the artists’ rights to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Whether or not the stars will respond to the criticism remains to be seen, but one thing is clear, the debate over celebrity spending in tough economic times is far from over.
