A dispute between acquaintances in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue ended in gunfire and a multi-agency federal arrest.

A late-night argument between acquaintances on Chicago’s Southwest Side ended in sudden violence and felony charges.

The confrontation began around 10:01 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

A 48-year-old man got into a heated quarrel with someone he knew in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue.

That location sits within the boundaries of the Chicago Police Department’s 10th District.

During the argument, the second man pulled out a handgun and fired at the 48-year-old victim.

A bullet struck the victim directly in his right hand.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the residential block to render aid to the injured man.

Paramedics transported the victim to Mount Sinai Hospital for immediate medical treatment.

Medical staff confirmed that the victim arrived at the hospital in good condition.

Officers cordoned off the area on South Washtenaw Avenue to search for shell casings and potential eyewitnesses.

Detectives opened an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dispute.

Investigators eventually identified the gunman as 62-year-old Tommie Griffin.

Griffin maintains a listed home address in the 9900 block of South Lafayette Avenue, according to a Chicago Police charge release.

Law enforcement officers tracked Griffin back to the neighborhood where the shooting originally occurred.

On October 5, 2026, members of the Chicago Police Department teamed up with federal agents.

The U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force joined local police to execute the arrest.

Officers located and apprehended Griffin in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue without further incident.

Police processed the suspect and turned the case details over to prosecutors.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office formally filed two severe felony charges against Griffin.

Griffin faces one felony count of first-degree attempted murder.

He also faces one felony count of aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm.

Court records list a detention hearing for Griffin on October 7, 2026.

The hearing takes place at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse located at 2600 South California Avenue.

Incidents like this highlight how quickly personal disputes can escalate when firearms are involved.

Community members living along South Washtenaw Avenue often rely on local neighborhood watch groups to stay informed.

Local leaders urge residents to report suspicious activity or active arguments to police before violence occurs.

Safety advocates recommend using anonymous tip lines to help investigators solve local gun crimes.

Residents in the area hope the quick arrest brings a sense of relief to the surrounding block.

Authorities confirmed that no additional information is available as the court case proceeds.
