Editorial Standards

Last updated: August 2026

BestLagos is committed to accurate, fair, and independent journalism. These editorial standards govern everything we publish on bestlagos.ng.

Our Mission

BestLagos exists to keep Lagos residents and Nigerians in the diaspora informed about crime, courts, public safety and everything happening across Lagos State every day. We report the news straight, verify before we publish, and correct when we are wrong.

Accuracy

Accuracy is our first obligation. Before publishing any story, we verify information through at least one official source such as a police statement, court filing, agency press release or named on-record source. We do not publish rumours as facts. Where information is unverified, we clearly label it as such in our Community Reports section.

If we make a factual error, we correct it promptly with a correction notice at the top of the article stating what was wrong and what the correct information is. We do not silently delete or rewrite published stories without disclosure.

Language on Arrests and Crime

Every person reported on by BestLagos who has not been convicted by a court of law is referred to as a suspect, accused or alleged offender. We use the words alleged, allegedly, is accused of, faces charges of and is charged with throughout our crime and court reporting.

We do not describe anyone as guilty until a court of competent jurisdiction has found them so. This is both our editorial standard and our legal obligation under Nigerian law.

Sources

We name our sources wherever possible. We use anonymous sources only when a source faces credible personal or professional risk if identified, and we note in the article that the source requested anonymity and why.

We do not pay sources for information.

We do not accept payment for news coverage. Editorial decisions are completely separate from advertising.

Community Reports

Stories published in our Community Reports category are sourced from tips, social media, and community members. They are clearly labeled as developing or unverified. Once a Community Report is confirmed through an official source, it is updated, moved to the appropriate news category, and the Community Report label is removed.

We do not publish the names of private individuals in Community Reports until their involvement has been confirmed by an official source.

Fairness and Right of Reply

When a story reflects negatively on an individual, organisation or institution, we make reasonable efforts to contact them for comment before publication. Where we are unable to reach them, we note this in the article. Where they decline to comment, we note this also.

Independence

BestLagos is independently owned and operated by Victor Olawuyi. We are not affiliated with any political party, government agency, security service or corporate interest.

No advertiser has any influence over our editorial decisions. Advertising is sold separately from and has no bearing on our news coverage.

Graphic Content

BestLagos does not publish graphic images of crime scenes, injuries, blood, deceased persons or any content that could cause distress to readers. We report crime and public safety news responsibly and with sensitivity to victims and their families.

Corrections and Complaints

If you believe BestLagos has published inaccurate information about you or any matter, contact us immediately at [email protected] with the article URL and the specific correction you are requesting. We will respond within 48 hours.

If you have a broader complaint about our editorial conduct, contact us at the same address, and we will review your complaint fairly and transparently.

Tips submitted to BestLagos are reviewed by our editorial team before any publication decision is made. Submitting a tip does not guarantee publication. Where a source requests confidentiality, we honour that request.
