Two 17-year-olds are in custody after a firearm went off during a struggle with Chicago police officers in the West Lawn neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
The incident began around 3:45 p.m. in the 3700 block of West 71st Street.
According to Chicago police, a woman reported that a male inside a Chevrolet SUV pointed a gun at her during an argument.
Officers quickly located the SUV and stopped the vehicle.
The driver, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested without incident.
Police say they recovered a firearm from him immediately.
A second 17-year-old boy then jumped out of the SUV and tried to run away.
As officers caught up and tried to arrest him, a struggle began.
During the scuffle, a gun hidden in the teen’s clothing fired.
The second teen was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, though police did not report any gunshot wounds or injuries to officers.
A second firearm was recovered at the scene.
Charges are currently pending against both teenagers.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the incident.
