At least five Nigerian soldiers were killed in a deadly suicide bombing at a military checkpoint in Pulka, near Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday, according to security sources and local reports. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has not released an official statement on the incident.
A security source revealed that the assailant managed to bypass security measures and infiltrate the checkpoint unnoticed. The bomber allegedly arrived from the Mandara Hills, a mountainous area along the Nigeria–Cameroon border known to have served as a hideout and transit route for insurgents.
According to the source, the suspect sneaked into the area under the cover of darkness and concealed himself behind military sandbags overnight. He reportedly waited until morning when soldiers deployed to man the checkpoint arrived.
“The terrorist came down from the Mandara Mountain and spent the night hidden behind a military sandbag. At daybreak, when soldiers resumed duty at the checkpoint, he approached them and detonated the explosive strapped to his body, killing five soldiers and himself instantly,” the source said.
The attack highlights the persistent security challenges facing parts of Borno State, despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups in the region.
Residents and security observers say the incident underscores the continued threat posed by suicide bombers and the urgent need for heightened surveillance and security around military formations and checkpoints.
