Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Spyro, has opened up about one of the darkest moments in his music career, revealing how a major collaboration with industry giants Davido and Mayorkun nearly derailed his journey instead of propelling him forward.
In a candid interview with HipTV, Spyro, known for his breakout hit Who Is Your Guy, recounted the emotional turmoil he experienced after the release of the 2018 remix of his single Funke, which featured Davido and Mayorkun. According to the singer, he had high hopes that the star-studded remix would catapult him to stardom but what followed was a painful reality check.
“I had a song back then that had Davido and Mayorkun on it. I actually thought that my life was about to change,” Spyro said. “The song came out big, and I went back down all of a sudden.”
The Afrobeat artist explained that despite the initial buzz the song generated, things quickly took a downward turn. One of the most shocking parts of the ordeal for him was being ghosted by the very artists he had worked with.
“I sat down and thought about it. How do I go from working with Davido, vibing with Mayorkun and all those guys, and all of a sudden, they no longer even pick your calls anymore?” he said.
Spyro recalled sitting on his staircase in tears, overwhelmed by disappointment, pressure to support his family, and a seemingly stalled career. “I had my parents at home that I needed to take care of, and a lot of things were just going wrong,” he added.
Despite the setback, Spyro’s story is one of resilience. He made a remarkable comeback in 2022 with ‘Who Is Your Guy,’ and has since collaborated with top artists like Tiwa Savage and Simi. His journey is a testament to the unpredictable nature of the music industry and the strength it takes to keep going.
