Afrobeats megastar Davido has once again shown his deep connection to football, taking to social media to share a humorous yet telling story following Barcelona’s defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.
Reacting to the match’s outcome, the singer posted on X:
“Football ehn fit give person BP… I remember when CR7 personally invited me come watch match for Old Trafford then couple of years ago… he don book dinner ALL! Party chillin etc… Nah so dem go lose match… BABA VEX GO HOUSE .. Since that day I still never forgive Maguire.”
The post, which quickly went viral, had fans in stitches, but also highlighted Davido’s long-standing friendship with Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
Back in 2017, Davido paid tribute to Ronaldo in his smash hit Fall, famously singing, “Cristiano Ronaldo, omo Nintendo.” Years later, in a 2023 episode of ABTalks with Anas Bukhash, the DMW boss confirmed the bond, referring to Ronaldo as a “very good friend.”
According to the story shared by Davido, the encounter at Old Trafford was supposed to be a special evening, with Ronaldo going all out to host him to a dinner, party plans, and all. However, a poor result on the pitch led to a complete mood switch, with Ronaldo storming home in frustration. The main culprit in Davido’s eyes? None other than Harry Maguire.
While the anecdote may have been sparked by Barcelona’s woes, Davido’s lighthearted jab reminds fans that football isn’t just a sport, it’s an emotional rollercoaster, even for global music icons.
And as far as Davido is concerned, some football heartbreaks are just too hard to forget.
