Chicago police have charged a 23-year-old man with attempted murder after a broad-daylight shooting.
Jose Montilla-Carreno faces several felony charges for the violent incident in West Englewood.
The shooting occurred on the morning of January 29, 2026.
Officers responded to the 6300 block of South Paulina Street around 9:00 a.m.
They found a 26-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder.
Emergency crews rushed the victim to the University of Chicago Hospital.
Medical staff listed the victim in fair condition following the attack.
Police say the victim was standing outside when the shooter opened fire.
Investigators identified the gunman as a “known offender” who fled the scene immediately.
The Homicide Investigation Support Team tracked Montilla-Carreno down 12 hours later.
Officers caught him in the 1800 block of West 43rd Street at 9:30 p.m. that same night.
Montilla-Carreno now faces one felony count of first-degree attempted murder.
He also faces one felony count of aggravated battery with a firearm.
The suspect appeared for a detention hearing today at the courthouse on South California Avenue.
