The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has conferred a prestigious chieftaincy title on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during a colourful traditional ceremony in Yorubaland.
Seyi Tinubu, who was accompanied by his wife, Layal, was installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland, a title often interpreted as “the beloved child” and associated with the promotion of Yoruba values, unity, and cultural heritage.
The ceremony drew a large gathering of political heavyweights and traditional rulers from across Nigeria. Also honoured at the event was Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, representing Zamfara West and former governor of Zamfara State, who received the title of Obaloyin of Yorubaland.
According to the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Obaloyin title represents love, compassion, justice, and harmony between the physical and spiritual realms. He added that both chieftaincy titles come with responsibilities that include advising the Alaafin, promoting Yoruba culture, fostering unity, and supporting education and social welfare initiatives.
Videos from the event circulating online showed a packed venue filled with dignitaries, including former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, lawmakers, and several traditional rulers.
Prominent government officials in attendance included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Senate Majority Leader Michael Bamidele, alongside other senior political figures.
