Okoya issued his apology via X (formerly Twitter) on January 10, 2025, emphasizing that his actions were not intended to cause harm and that his intentions were “pure and naive.”

He also expressed regret for any alarm caused, admitting he was unaware of the legal consequences of his actions.

He said: “To the Nigerian people, my actions were not to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support in this situation as I had no intention to raise such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action. @PoliceNG”.

The video, which included a police officer handling the cash, sparked outrage. Many questioned the ethical implications of the officer’s involvement.

Following this, the Nigerian Police Force identified the officer in the clip and detained them for disciplinary action.

The Force PRO, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the actions as unethical and reiterated the importance of upholding the police’s credibility.
