The Nigerian gospel music community is in mourning following the passing of renowned gospel artist Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known by his stage name New Jerusalem. The beloved singer and minister of the word died at the age of 53, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the soundscape of Christian worship in Benue State and beyond.
News of his death has triggered a wave of heartfelt tributes, particularly across Benue State where the late artist was celebrated for fusing Tiv Swange rhythms with powerful gospel messages. His music not only entertained but served as a spiritual compass for many, becoming a staple in Christian gatherings, especially among Tiv-speaking believers.
Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a delegation of mourners to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi to offer his condolences. Accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom shared personal memories of his bond with the late gospel icon, describing Ikyereve as a devout Christian and a musical evangelist whose influence crossed international borders.
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said during the visit. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”
The former governor also recalled a profound moment when he saw New Jerusalem’s music featured in an international program in Australia, where a Tiv man used the songs while teaching music. “It was a clear testament to the global impact of Ikyereve’s gospel ministry,” Ortom noted.
Ortom pledged his continued support to the bereaved family and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, assuring them that his relationship with the family would extend beyond the burial.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the elder brother of the deceased, expressed deep gratitude to the former governor for his unwavering support throughout Israel’s illness and after his passing. In a touching revelation, he shared that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in honor of the former governor’s compassion and involvement in their lives.
Prayers were offered by respected leaders of the Brethren Prayer Group, including Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, who uplifted the family in faith and unity.
The late Israel Ikyereve is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and several relatives and spiritual sons.
His final burial rites are scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
As preparations begin for his burial, fans and fellow believers across the country continue to pay tribute to a man whose voice became a beacon of faith, hope, and cultural pride.
