A Lagos resident, Dave Nduka, has come forward with a harrowing account of alleged police brutality, detailing how he was threatened, assaulted, and publicly humiliated by police officers in the Gbagada/Anthony area of Lagos on Wednesday.
Nduka left the IFitness gym in Gbagada around 1:35 pm, feeling relaxed after his workout. He wore a blue gym jersey and drove towards work via the Gbagada/Bariga exit to Ikorodu Road.
This spot is known for frequent police stops, especially targeting young people from the nearby gym.
Officers flagged him down. Nduka rolled down his window and greeted them politely. One officer asked why his body was shaking and suggested he was up to something wrong.
Nduka explained he had just finished exercising, but the officer ignored him and ordered, “Park your car or we shoot.”
Fearing for his life, Nduka drove away but was met minutes later at the Anthony underpass by the same officer, who was pointing a gun at him.
According to Nduka’s post, the officer fired a gunshot into the air before his colleagues arrived. The group of officers allegedly beat Nduka, tore his clothes, and punctured two of his car tires.
The incident, which unfolded in public view, drew a crowd of onlookers, including an army officer who intervened on Nduka’s behalf.
The officers reportedly fled the scene in a commercial bus, leaving Nduka’s car with punctured tires and his keys with a stranger. Nduka said he was left with “physical scars” and a “wound on his dignity” from the traumatic experience.
