A North Chicago man is behind bars after allegedly firing a handgun into the air multiple times outside a local bar early Saturday morning.
At approximately 1:50 a.m. on December 27, 2025, a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy was monitoring the closing of a bar in the 37800 block of North Sheridan Road.
The deputy heard several gunshots coming from the parking lot and immediately alerted other units.
A second deputy spotted a white work van speeding away from the scene.
After pulling the vehicle over, deputies identified the driver as Danis J. Nunez-Bonilla, 22.
During the stop, deputies discovered:
-
A 9mm pistol equipped with an extended magazine.
-
Multiple spent shell casings inside the van.
-
Another 11 spent casings on the ground near the bar.
Investigators believe Nunez-Bonilla fired the shots as an “act of celebration.” No injuries were reported.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Nunez-Bonilla with several felonies, including:
-
Four counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon
-
Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon
-
Reckless Discharge of a Firearm
Sheriff John D. Idleburg praised the quick response of the deputies, stating they “safely took him into custody without anyone being injured.”
Nunez-Bonilla is currently held at the Lake County Jail. Prosecutors have filed a petition to keep him in custody while he awaits trial.
