Nollywood star Nkechi Sunday Blessing has shared one of the most troubling experiences she faced at the onset of her acting journey.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, Nkechi disclosed that one of her biggest early-career challenges was being offered deeply inappropriate and outrageous movie roles.
According to her, one of the first scripts she received as a newcomer required her to engage in a highly disturbing act.
“Despite being a newcomer, I was given a script to sleep with a dog. I rejected it because I can’t start off my career like that. Imagine my first ever movie, I am sleeping with a dog. It doesn’t make sense,” she said.
Nkechi stressed that she refused the role because she didn’t want such a degrading act to define her image in the industry. She noted that whatever an actor starts with often becomes the tag the public associates with them.
She added that although she turned down the role, several other actresses quickly accepted it, none of whom, according to her, rose to prominence.
The actress also revealed that she was offered another extreme role later on, which she rejected immediately for the same reason, to protect her reputation before her career even took off.
Leaving that troubling experience behind, Nkechi met veteran filmmaker Emeka Duru, who eventually connected her to a role in Imem Isong’s film Through The Fire; a project she describes as the true beginning of her Nollywood success.
