NASCAR fans and the racing community are in shock after Greg Biffle, a former champion driver, died in a plane crash on December 18, 2025.
The accident happened at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina and claimed the lives of seven people, including Biffle and several family members.
Biffle, who was 55, died along with his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, his daughter Emma from his first marriage, and his young son Ryder.
The other victims included Craig Wadsworth, a friend from the NASCAR world, pilot Dennis Dutton, and Dutton’s son Jack. First responders called the scene one of the worst they had seen.
Biffle built a strong career in NASCAR.
He won the Truck Series championship in 2000 and the Xfinity Series title in 2002.
In the top Cup Series, he earned 19 wins during his time with Roush Racing, now known as RFK Racing.
In 2023, NASCAR named him one of its 75 greatest drivers ever.
After retiring from full-time racing, Biffle focused on helping others.
He started the Greg Biffle Foundation to support animal welfare.
In 2024, after Hurricane Helene hit, he used his own helicopter to deliver supplies and rescue people in western North Carolina.
His efforts saved lives and earned him the Myers Brothers Award from the National Motorsports Press Association.
NASCAR Statement
NASCAR shared a statement on X: “The NASCAR family is devastated at the loss of Greg Biffle, who was one of our 75 greatest drivers and became known for his relentless post-career humanitarian work. We extend our deepest condolences.”
The organization added that Biffle was a fierce competitor and a true friend to many in the sport.

Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many. His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport.
On the track, Greg’s talent and tenacity earned him championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, as well as numerous wins and accolades in the NASCAR Cup Series. Beyond his racing career, he gave of himself for the betterment of our community. Most notably, Greg spent countless hours of his time helping the citizens of North Carolina during the disasters that followed Hurricane Helene. His tireless work saved lives.

The families of the victims released a joint message: “We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones. This tragedy has left all our families heartbroken beyond words.” They asked for privacy as they grieve and honor the lives lost.
A friend, Garrett Mitchell (known as Cleetus McFarland), confirmed on social media that Biffle and his family were on their way to visit him when the crash happened. He said, “We are devastated.”
