Popular Nigerian comedian, Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has shared how his father once regretted sponsoring his education after discovering he had ventured into skit making.
Speaking in a heartfelt interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father had high expectations for him and strongly wanted him to become a lawyer. Despite his efforts, he failed to gain admission to study law and instead enrolled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
It was during his time on campus that he stumbled on skit making, a discovery that would later define his career. However, the early days were tough, and he wasn’t making any money from the craft.
Sabinus disclosed that after graduation, he hid his comedy journey from his father. But a year later, his dad started seeing his face on posters for comedy shows. His sisters later confirmed to him that Sabinus was indeed a comedian, a revelation that angered him.
“He was very furious,” Sabinus recalled. “He said, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”
Despite the initial disapproval, the comedian noted that things eventually took a positive turn. When he began earning from comedy and sending money to his father, the older man had a change of heart and gave his blessings.
Today, Sabinus stands as one of Nigeria’s most prominent skit makers, a success story his father now proudly embraces.
