A shooting incident near Brown University buildings on Saturday afternoon left multiple people shot, prompting a massive law enforcement response and a campus-wide shelter-in-place order.
Brown and Providence police are currently on the scene, actively searching for suspects following the developing situation. Emergency medical services are also present.
The initial alarm, a “BrownUAlert,” reported a shooter near the Barus & Holley Engineering building. Students were immediately told to “shelter in place.”
The situation has been fluid and confusing. After a report incorrectly stated one person was in custody, a follow-up alert clarified that no suspect has been arrested and students must avoid the Barus & Holley area.
Another report warned of shots fired near Governor Street. Law enforcement is responding to this area as well.
The university repeatedly directed students and staff with the standard safety protocol: “Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden.” The alert stressed the RUN, HIDE, FIGHT guidelines for personal safety.
Providence police confirmed that multiple individuals have been shot but have not yet released details on the extent of their injuries. The public is instructed to shelter in place or avoid the vicinity until further notice.
