MORTON GROVE, IL — A quiet morning in Morton Grove turned violent Wednesday when car burglars fired shots at a homeowner, narrowly missing him and his sleeping children.
The incident occurred around 6:02 a.m. in the 5700 block of Reba Street.
According to Morton Grove police, two suspects were caught attempting to break into a parked work vehicle.
The homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons, said his dog alerted him to the break-in.
When he opened his front door, the dog ran out, and the suspects immediately fired four shots.
One bullet shattered the van’s window, while another struck the victim’s front door, just inches from his head.
Inside the home, the victim’s children were asleep just steps away from where the gunfire hit.
“It doesn’t make sense,” said Al Matias, a neighbor of 30 years. “What’s going on in those people’s minds?”
The thieves managed to steal approximately $500 worth of tools before fleeing the scene.
Police describe the getaway vehicle as a gray Genesis sedan sporting a stolen Illinois license plate.
While the victim is frustrated by the property damage and stolen gear, he expressed immense gratitude that his family survived the encounter.
Police confirm there is no ongoing threat to the public.
However, the suspects remain at large.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Morton Grove Police Department at 847-470-5200.
