The ongoing high-profile divorce saga between Nollywood actor Yul Edochie and his estranged wife, May Edochie, has taken another dramatic turn as May’s lead legal counsel, Emeka Ugwuonye, officially withdraws from the case, citing persistent harassment from her fan base.
In a statement issued via the Facebook page of his law firm, Due Process Advocate (DPA), Ugwuonye revealed that the legal representation, once formed to secure justice for May in the wake of her marital collapse, has come to an end due to what he described as a “hostile environment” fueled by May’s most vocal supporters, popularly known as ‘May Nation.’
“DPA’s services to Queen May have come to an end,” the statement read. “The hostile environment fostered by certain individuals within the ‘May Nation’ group made it untenable for us to continue effective representation.”
According to Ugwuonye, he and his team initially stepped in to represent May during the emotionally turbulent period following Yul Edochie’s controversial decision to take actress Judy Austin as a second wife. However, what started as a noble legal pursuit allegedly turned toxic due to unchecked aggression and cyberbullying from May’s own supporters.
The lawyer disclosed that his staff endured constant online abuse, which, surprisingly, he claimed was even more intense than the backlash they had faced from Yul Edochie’s fan base.
“My staff face daily abuse from May’s supporters, having already endured similar attacks from Yul’s supporters,” he noted. “Queen May’s inability to meaningfully influence this increasingly toxic faction of her supporters is incompatible with the level of investment required for our representation.”
Despite stepping down, Ugwuonye maintained his admiration for May, describing her as a strong woman who has been a victim of betrayal and forced polygamy. He emphasized that her pain is valid and that she remains deserving of justice and peace.
“Queen May is a remarkable individual and a victim of betrayal. While Yul and his alleged partner Judy may have caused her emotional trauma, the behavior of some of her fans has only made matters worse,” he added.
Ugwuonye also assured the public that DPA would work closely with May’s next legal team to ensure a seamless handover of the case, reaffirming their support for her journey ahead.
“DPA will work cooperatively with Queen May and her team to transition our work to any successor representatives she designates,” the statement concluded.
May Edochie’s marital crisis with Yul has continued to dominate headlines and stir intense debates online, especially surrounding issues of polygamy, betrayal, and emotional resilience.
