The Lake County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of an 8-year-old boy found dead in Round Lake Beach.
Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the young victim as Markell Pierce.
First responders rushed to a home in the 1900 block of Cedar Lake Road around 2:05 p.m. last Friday.
They received a report regarding an unresponsive child at the residence.
Officers arrived on the scene first and immediately began performing CPR on the boy.
Paramedics then transported the child to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Doctors at the hospital later pronounced him dead.
First responders noted the boy appeared malnourished and had visible bruising on his body.
These findings prompted local police to request help from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
Prosecutors have since released disturbing details regarding the conditions the boy faced.
The boy had been beaten repeatedly with a belt in the time leading up to his death.
According to the prosecutor, he was also deprived of food for several days.
Investigators say the conditions inside the home indicated long-term physical, mental, and nutritional abuse.
Authorities arrested the boy’s mother, 33-year-old Dominique Servant, and her boyfriend, 38-year-old Joey L. Ruffin.
Both suspects now face two counts of first-degree murder and one count of child endangerment causing death.
A 10-year-old sibling was also taken to a hospital after showing signs of abuse.
Coroner Banek stated that an autopsy conducted Friday confirmed injuries and malnourishment.
The official cause of death is pending further laboratory and forensic testing results.
“The loss of Markell Pierce is devastating,” Banek said in a public statement.
She emphasized that no child should suffer at the hands of their caregivers.
