HOUSTON, Texas — A tragic incident in southeast Houston has left four children without their mother after a man allegedly struck her with his car during a high-speed chase involving his girlfriend.
The victim, identified as Xochitl Santos, was standing in her own driveway with some of her children last Tuesday afternoon when the fatal crash occurred.
According to Houston police, the driver of a Chevy Cobalt was chasing his girlfriend’s gold Toyota sedan following a heated argument at a nearby apartment complex.
Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the tragedy:
-
The Argument: A man and woman were seen arguing at an apartment complex on Corder Street.
-
The Chase: The woman drove away in a gold sedan, and the man followed closely behind at a high rate of speed.
-
The Crash: As the vehicles sped through the residential neighborhood, the man lost control of his Chevy and veered into Santos’ driveway, striking her.
Neighbors reported hearing a “loud crash” and rushing outside to help, but Santos’ injuries were fatal.
Residents expressed outrage, noting that the couple involved didn’t even live in the complex anymore but had returned to visit friends.
The driver of the Chevy was arrested at the scene.
Houston police confirmed that charges are currently pending as the investigation continues.
For the Santos family, the loss is immeasurable.
“I’m so mad that people engage in reckless stupidity,” said neighbor Ramiah Wallace.
“Now children lost their mother over something that didn’t even matter.“
