According to LAWMA’s official statement, the incident occurred when a speeding mini-bus collided with a stationary LAWMA operational truck during a routine waste evacuation assignment.

“The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of one of our sanitation workers, Mr. Bashiru Nuhu, who lost his life in a road accident involving a mini-bus and one of our operational trucks in the Ketu area,” the statement read.

The agency emphasized that Nuhu’s death was a significant loss to the LAWMA community, underscoring his commitment to keeping Lagos clean.

Addressing misinformation circulating in some media reports, LAWMA clarified the circumstances of the accident. “Contrary to some reports, we wish to clarify that the LAWMA truck was carrying out its routine waste evacuation assignment when the unfortunate incident occurred,” the statement noted.

The truck was reportedly parked properly by the roadside, with its amber warning lights activated in line with standard safety protocols. The collision, LAWMA explained, resulted from the mini-bus traveling at high speed, losing control, and crashing into the stationary vehicle.

The agency has launched a thorough investigation into the incident, collaborating with relevant authorities to establish all facts and ensure accountability. “LAWMA has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, in collaboration with relevant authorities, to ensure that all facts are established, and justice is served,” the statement concluded.
