The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), under General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has introduced the “Media Traffic Mayor” initiative, inducting prominent media practitioners as Traffic Mayors to improve urban mobility across Lagos.
This innovative program aims to strengthen LASTMA’s efforts in ensuring traffic order, safety, and seamless transportation by leveraging media influence.
The initiative positions media professionals as ambassadors of civic discipline, working closely with LASTMA officers to sensitize motorists, share traffic advisories, counter misinformation, and promote lawful road behavior.
Bakare-Oki, during the inauguration, highlighted the media’s critical role in shaping public consciousness, stating, “This initiative broadens stakeholder engagement by embedding media practitioners as active participants in the crusade for traffic sanity, deepening voluntary compliance.”
Mr. Awoyemi Jimmy, Director of Traffic Advocacy and Special Mayor, described the program as a significant administrative innovation.
He emphasized that managing traffic in a complex megacity like Lagos requires partnerships with media and civic stakeholders, aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to seamless mobility and socio-economic productivity.
The Traffic Mayors will collaborate with LASTMA to foster a culture of orderliness and safety, marking a new era in Lagos traffic governance. For emergencies or traffic concerns, LASTMA’s toll-free hotline (080000527862) is available in Yoruba, English, and Pidgin.
