Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has broken her silence following the wave of criticism that trailed her recent revelation about taking her teenage daughter, Similoluwa, to a nightclub.
The actress came under fire after a viral interview with content creator Mr. Lil Gaga, where she mentioned that she took her 17-year-old daughter to a club for the first time and allowed her to experience a taste of nightlife; a statement that many interpreted as promoting underage drinking and irresponsible parenting.
Bakare’s comments quickly stirred debate across social media, with many Nigerians condemning her for what they saw as a poor example of parenting. Some accused her of reinforcing negative stereotypes about single mothers in the entertainment industry, while others defended her, saying she was simply trying to bond with her daughter in a modern, open-minded way.
Reacting to the backlash, Laide Bakare took to Instagram to clarify her statement, insisting that her words had been taken out of context. The actress posted a video from her daughter’s birthday after-party, explaining that she only meant that she took Similoluwa to a club setting for the first time, not that she introduced her to alcohol or wild partying.
In her post, she wrote:
“Let me mention clearly here that I never said I introduced my daughter, @simlineboss, to alcohol. I only stated that she entered a club with me for the very first time in her life at her birthday after-party. How is that bad naw?”
Bakare emphasized that her intention was to create a memorable experience for her daughter as part of her birthday celebration and to guide her responsibly through adulthood, not to expose her to reckless behavior.
She also urged critics to stop twisting her words for attention, stressing that her relationship with her daughter is built on love, openness, and guidance.
The controversy comes amid growing conversations around parenting styles among Nigerian celebrities, with many divided on whether early exposure to nightlife helps teenagers learn responsibility or encourages rebellion.
