Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to Lagos State Governor, has clarified that recent statements by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago were not a threat to Lagos or Ogun states.
Speaking at the First Bank Nigeria Limited Africa and Export Expo 2025, Bago’s comments focused on adding value to livestock production to boost the economic worth of meat and protein supplies from Niger State.
Governor Bago announced plans to halt the movement of live cows to Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and other southwestern states, proposing instead to process meat in Niger and deliver it frozen.
Ajetunmobi explained that this was about ensuring Niger’s farmers gain more profit through local processing, not about disrupting supplies.
“Governor Bago was not threatening Lagos and Ogun states,” Ajetunmobi said. “He actually was talking about “value addition” in livestock production to raise economic values of meats and other protein supplies from Niger State to Lagos and Ogun food markets.”
Bago also committed to expanding land allocated to Lagos for a N500 billion farming initiative, increasing it from 20,000 hectares to 100,000 hectares. This move aims to boost food production and strengthen ties between the states.
