The Lagos State Government, acting through the Lagos Building Control Agency (LASBCA), began the removal of illegal building extensions and attachments at the Mandilas market area on Lagos Island yesterday.
This removal exercise was initiated after the expiry of a seven-day ultimatum given to the property owners. The ultimatum, issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, instructed the owners to remove the illegal structures themselves.
According to the LASBCA Coordinating Director, Builder Gbaye Florence, some owners failed to comply with the self-removal instruction, forcing the Agency to step in.
The Director stated that the Agency remains committed to aligning Lagos with the Governor’s goal of a 21st-Century Economy (THEMES+ Agenda). She warned building owners and developers to strictly adhere to Lagos State Building Codes and Regulations to prevent structural failures that could lead to loss of life and property.
The enforcement action is part of the government’s continuous efforts to ensure compliance and order in the built environment.
