A violent brawl in Balogun Market on Lagos Island claimed one life on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, prompting the Lagos State Police Command to clarify that the incident was not an ethnic clash but a fight among hoodlums.
The incident, which occurred around 11 a.m., disrupted the busy market but caused no further casualties or property damage.
The Lagos State Police Command reported that Ebuka Adindu from Abia State stabbed Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State to death during a free-for-all fight among miscreants.
Adindu then stabbed himself in the shoulder, fell unconscious, and was arrested while receiving treatment in a hospital.
He remains under arrest and will face prosecution upon recovery. Police confirmed that no innocent lives were lost, and no goods or properties were damaged.
Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin emphasized that the incident was not tribally motivated, countering earlier rumors of ethnic tensions.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to reiterate that the incident is not a tribal clash but purely between miscreants and hoodlums around the Balogun Market,” the statement read.
Normalcy has been restored, with officers and the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps maintaining peace in the area.
Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate to sustain peace, assuring the public that Lagos remains safe.
“Marketers and the general public on the Island and other parts of Lagos State are encouraged to go about their businesses without fear,” the statement added.
