The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Maritime Day, emphasizing the need for global collaboration to protect the world’s oceans.
The event, held at Eko Hotel, Lagos, was attended by top government officials and maritime stakeholders.
Representing the Managing Director, Dr. Abudantsoho, the Executive Director of Marine and Operations, Engr. Badmus Olalekan, spoke on the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.” He stated that everyone is a beneficiary of the ocean, with over 90 percent of global trade happening by sea. He stressed that this places a strong obligation on all to protect the ocean and its resources.
Beyond the celebration, Engr. Olalekan urged every stakeholder to commit to making the ocean cleaner and port operations more eco-friendly. He assured that the NPA, under the guidance of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, remains committed to promoting port eco-friendliness.
He concluded his speech with a reminder of the enduring connection between humanity and the ocean, saying, “As we make up our minds to clean up the ocean for sustainability, we are making up our minds to clean up ourselves.”
