Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has stirred controversy online after referring to herself as “a Jesus baby” during an interview at the 2025 Fashion Awards.
When asked about her zodiac sign by The People Gallery, the Crazy Tings hitmaker replied:
“Oh, I’m a Jesus baby. My sign is love, peace and joy.”
The comment, captured in a now-viral video, triggered heated reactions across social media, with many questioning why a secular artist would publicly identify herself with Jesus while making non-gospel music. Critics accused her of mixing religious identity with worldly art, while others argued that her statement oversimplified Christianity.
However, not all backlash was negative, some users defended her, saying Christians should appreciate her choosing faith over astrology, while others claimed they understood her sentiment and supported her self-description.
Some critics argued she makes worldly music and performs provocatively, so calling herself “a Jesus baby” feels hypocritical.
Others insisted Christianity is more than love and joy, stressing that repentance and lifestyle matter too.
A section of users felt the statement hurts her brand and urged her to focus on her music persona.
Some defended her, saying believers should support her for choosing identity in Christ instead of zodiac signs.
A few commenters agreed with her and said they also prefer identifying with Jesus rather than astrology.
