Veteran Nigerian singer, Jaywon, has openly criticised Billboard over its recently released “50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time” list, insisting that none of the tracks featured has had more cultural influence than his evergreen hit, “This Year.”
In a series of posts shared via his official X account, the singer passionately defended the legacy of the 2012 hit, which has continued to dominate playlists and resurface at major events year after year.
“Trending since 2012 and still going strong. Tell me, who else has pulled that off? Hate is inevitable. Year after year, both gospel and Afrobeats acts copy the same vibe, yet we remain unshaken. Cry harder, I said it before, and I’ll say it again…. No song on that list has more cultural impact than #Thisyear by Jaywon!!” he wrote.
Jaywon further argued that “This Year” has enjoyed more viral moments and cultural significance than several tracks on the list compiled by Billboard editors. The song, which has become a soundtrack for new beginnings, festive celebrations, and even gospel renditions, is widely recognised as one of the most enduring records of the past decade.
Interestingly, Jaywon is not the only artist who feels sidelined by Billboard’s ranking. Controversial singer Terry G also expressed disappointment, claiming he was “robbed” by being left out of the Best All-Time Afrobeats compilation.
Billboard’s list has sparked heated debates among fans and industry insiders alike, as many continue to question the criteria used in selecting songs that made the cut. While some applauded the platform for recognising the global growth of Afrobeats, others, like Jaywon, argue that timeless tracks with undeniable cultural weight were unjustly ignored.
