Nigerian music legend 2Baba has finally opened up about his much-speculated split from wife and longtime partner, Annie Macaulay. After over a decade of being together, the couple, once celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most iconic celebrity unions, have gone their separate ways.
Appearing on the 234 Mzansi Podcast hosted by media personality Nedu, 2Face addressed the issue publicly for the first time, confirming that he and Annie had made the difficult decision to end their marriage after trying to make things work for years.
While choosing not to divulge the exact cause of their separation, 2Face praised Annie, describing her as an “amazing woman” and noted that they both gave their best to the relationship.
“I think both of us gave it our best. And why we’re not together today is not something I’m going to talk about publicly,” he said.
“Me and her have our own understanding. She’s amazing, it just wasn’t working no more. Something wey una get before wey no dey again, that’s why I said I won’t talk about it here.”
The African Queen crooner went further to share his thoughts on love, marriage, and societal pressure, stressing that staying in an unhappy relationship should never be romanticized.
“I think you should try to fix your marriage but if it’s beyond that, I don’t think anybody should force anything. Only people in the marriage know exactly what they’re feeling,” he noted.
2Face also emphasized the emotional toll of staying in an unfulfilling relationship, urging people to prioritize their inner peace and not give in to societal expectations.
“It’s always good not to torture yourself, and not to allow society or people to dictate your feelings. Because this thing called ‘living in bondage’ is real and many people have gone to their grave very sad people. So for me, if it’s obvious that people cannot work things out then I don’t think anybody should force themselves to be together.”
Following the emotional revelation, reactions have been mixed across social media. While many fans commended the singer for being honest and mature in handling the situation, others criticized him, accusing him of being a “serial cheat” and suggesting that he should have spoken less.
Despite the criticism, 2Face’s candidness offered a rare look into the struggles behind celebrity marriages, reminding the public that even the most admired unions sometimes reach their limit.
