Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday for Isese Day.

This work-free day gives public servants and residents a chance to celebrate Yoruba traditions and indigenous religion. Isese Day honors the Yoruba people’s cultural heritage, including their deities and ancestral practices.

Over three million Lagosians are expected to join in the festivities, which promote unity and respect for traditional worship.

The holiday marks the end of a week filled with traditional activities. People across Lagos will visit sacred sites, enjoy cultural shows, and take part in community events.

If you wonder how to spend this special day, here are seven simple and fun things to do. These ideas mix cultural experiences with relaxation, making the holiday enjoyable for everyone.

  1. Attend Cultural Performances and Festivals
Join lively festivals around Lagos where drummers, dancers, and storytellers showcase Yoruba arts. Many communities host free events with music and masquerades. Check local spots like Freedom Park or community centers for schedules.
  2. Visit Sacred Sites and Shrines
Explore places tied to Yoruba history, such as the Osun Sacred Grove (if you can travel) or local shrines in Lagos. These visits let you learn about deities like Sango or Ogun. Remember to show respect and follow any rules at these sites.
  3. Participate in Communal Prayers
Take part in group prayers organized by traditional groups. These gatherings focus on blessings, peace, and gratitude. Look for events in areas like Ikeja or Surulere, where communities come together for spiritual moments.
  4. Explore Art and Culture Centers
Head to the Nike Centre for Art and Culture in Lekki. You can see beautiful Yoruba sculptures, textiles, and paintings. It’s a great way to understand Isese traditions through art, and entry is often affordable.
  5. Enjoy Traditional Yoruba Food
Try local dishes like pounded yam with egusi soup or amala at markets such as Oyingbo or Balogun. Many vendors offer special meals for the holiday. Share a meal with family or friends to celebrate the day’s spirit.
  6. Relax at Beaches or Parks
Visit popular spots like Tarkwa Bay Beach or Lekki Conservation Centre for a calm day out. Walk through nature trails, spot wildlife, or just unwind by the water. It’s perfect if you want a break from city hustle while reflecting on cultural roots.
  7. Join Educational Tours or Workshops
Sign up for cultural tours that explain Yoruba history and Isese practices. Places like the National Museum in Lagos offer insights into artifacts and traditions. These activities help you learn while having fun.

This Isese Day holiday reminds Lagos residents of their rich heritage. Whether you dive into traditions or simply relax, make the most of the day. Stay safe, respect others, and enjoy the break! For more updates on Lagos events, visit bestlagos.ng.
