Federal authorities are facing intense pressure to identify the ICE agent who shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on January 7.
While social media rumors have pointed to a man named “Steve Grove,” officials have not confirmed this identity, and no public records currently link him to the incident.
The incident occurred around 9:30 AM at East 34th Street and Portland Avenue.
ICE agents were in the area for a large-scale immigration enforcement operation when one of their vehicles allegedly got stuck in the snow.
Good, a U.S. citizen and reported “legal observer,” was sitting in her Honda Pilot nearby.
Witnesses and bystander video show agents surrounding her car.
As Good moved the vehicle, an agent standing in front of the car fired three shots through the windshield. Good later died at a hospital.
There is a sharp divide between federal and local accounts of the shooting:
-
The Federal Claim: Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump stated the agent acted in self-defense. They claim Good “weaponized” her vehicle and ran over the officer.
-
The Local Response: Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the federal explanation “garbage.” Governor Tim Walz warned against “federal propaganda,” and Police Chief Brian O’Hara noted that Good was not under investigation for any crime.
Who is the Agent?
As of January 7, 2026, the FBI is leading the investigation. The agent has only been described as “experienced.”
He was treated at a hospital for injuries and released. Secretary Noem stated that the FBI will decide if and when body camera footage is released to the public.
