A tragic road crash occurred early this morning in Ikorodu, Lagos, when a gas tanker collided with a bus, killing one person and injuring two others. The accident happened at Idi Iroko, heading towards Ogolonto, around 8:37 AM.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a fully loaded commercial Mazda bus (registration number LND 490 SD) recklessly vied for the right of way along the main carriageway from the Agric axis and violently collided with a fast-moving truck (registration number EKY 121 YJ).
One passenger, seated at the bus’s doorway, was thrown from the vehicle and crushed under the truck’s rear tires, resulting in instant death.
Two other passengers, a male and a female, suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The deceased’s remains were handed over to their family by the Nigeria Police Force, with support from the Owutu Police Division.
Police and LASTMA teams responded swiftly, starting rescue efforts immediately. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) was also contacted to assist.
Update [11:03 AM]: The vehicles involved in the accident have been towed off the road. LASTMA and police personnel remain on-site, managing the situation and ensuring safety.
The crash caused major disruptions, stranding passengers at the Agric BRT terminal.
Eyewitnesses told BestLagos.ng they were stuck waiting due to the road blockage. One commuter said, “Passengers are stranded in the BRT terminal at the Agric bus stop, including me.”
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged drivers to exercise caution, especially on busy routes like Ikorodu Road.
