Nigerian music superstar Davido is currently on his 5iveAlive tour, shutting down arenas and captivating fans across continents. But amid the roaring cheers and flashing lights, the award-winning singer took a moment to reflect on his early grind and unwavering passion for music.
Following his recent electrifying performance in Toronto, Davido had an emotional backstage conversation with Nigerian music executive, Bankulli; a key figure who witnessed the singer’s early hustle in the music scene.
In the candid exchange, Davido reminisced on a defining moment during his teenage years in Atlanta, where he found himself in the same room with Afrobeats legends, Don Jazzy and D’Banj.
“You remember in Atlanta, 2007 or 08 or 09, my father’s house when I was freestyling for Don Jazzy and D’Banj. Jazzy was looking at me like mehn… when he was leaving he still looked back at me. He looked at me like, ‘this boy has something,’” Davido recalled.
The now-global superstar recounted how he seized that golden opportunity to impress even if it meant running an errand first.
“They sent me to go and buy McDonald’s so that I can freestyle. I went to buy McDonald’s for them with my papa car… with Chairman’s car, Rolls-Royce, 50 years old!” he said, laughing. “Now I’m singing to 30,000 people and by next year I will make it 60,000.”
The “Unavailable” hitmaker, known for his tireless work ethic and larger-than-life energy, also made it clear that money is no longer a motivating factor.
When asked by Bankulli why he continues to push hard despite his success, Davido replied, “It’s not for the money. If I don’t work again in my life from today, I have billions of dollars waiting for me.”
“But I love my job,” he added. “You can’t even tell me about it. That’s why I do this.”
From running fast-food errands in a Rolls-Royce to headlining arenas packed with tens of thousands, Davido’s journey is a powerful reminder of where passion, grit, and consistency can take you.
